The Department of Animal Biosciences offers our deepest sympathies to the Indigenous Peoples and communities during this sad and difficult time. As we observe National Indegneous History Month, the horrific discovery of 751 unmarked graves of Indigenous children on the grounds of former residential schools, in addition to the remains of 215 children found in May, are tragic reminders of the truths of Canada's past.
The Department of Animal Biosciences would like to congratulate the Class of 2021 which includes our newest Animal Science, Animal Biology and Equine Management graduates! The past year has certainly been a challenging one and you should all be extremely proud of your accomplishements. Wishing you all the best as you start your next adventures.
Congratulations to Claire Mindus (Animal Biosciences and Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare) on being named the winner of the 2021 3MT® U of G Competition! Claire was also the recipient of the Community Choice Award at this year's event. She will now go on to represent Guelph in a provincial showcase this summer.
Dr. Trevor DeVries, a Professor in ABSc and Canada Research Chair in Dairy Cattle Welfare and Behavior, was announced as the recipient of the 2021 Nutrition Professionals Inc. Applied Dairy Nutrition Award to be handed out at the ADSA (American Dairy Science Association) Annual Meeting this July. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in research, teaching and extension in the dairy industry.

Brandon Van Soest, a PhD candidate working with Dr. Trevor DeVries, has been awarded the Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) doctoral scholarship. Valued at $105,000 over 3 years, the scholarship will support Von Soest while he is carrying out research into the nutritional management of robot-milked cows. More information about Brandon and his research can be found on page 41 of the May 2021 issue of Milk Producer.
