The Department of Animal Biosciences is pleased to welcome Prof. Marcio Duarte as a new assistant professor in meat science and muscle biology. He begins in the role in January 2021.
“We are very happy to welcome Marcio to the department,” shares Prof. Jim Squares, department chair. “His experience in the molecular and cellular aspects of meat production, combined with his understanding of practical applications for industry, are a perfect fit for our department.”
It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Larry Milligan on May 22, 2020. Dr. Milligan was a long-standing member of the University of Guelph community with roles as the Dean of Research, Vice-President (Research) and as a faculty member in the Department of Animal Biosciences (formerly the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences).

The Fish Site recently highlighted a talk given by Prof. Dominque Bureau at Alltech's One Virtual Conference. In his talk “On the money: optimising performance and profit with dynamic nutritional modelling, Prof. Bureau, who runs the Fish Nutrition Research Laboratory here in Animal Biosciences, discussed the benefits of incorporating nutritional modelling into nutritional aquaculture research.

Sudhanshu Sudan, a PhD student working with Prof. Julang Li, has been awarded first-place in the Nutreco Young Researchers Prize competition. The three prizes "acknowledge and champion the most promising research by PhD and post-doctorate students working around the world across animal, aquaculture and veterinary sciences."
Prof. Katrina Merkies, faculty advisor for the Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management degree program in Equine Management, recently spoke with CBC news about some of the challenges facing the equine industry due to COVID-19.
